Food in Puerto Maldonado
Wills Burgers ★★★★
232 Loreto (Plaza de Armas)
Will’s is absolutely my favorite hamburger place in Peru. It’s so good that I go almost every day because I know that I won’t eat hamburgers and fries this good until the next time I return.
The hamburger itself isn’t so big though it is a thick piece of meat, but the taste of the meat is superb. Often there is a bit of a strange after taste with hamburger meat in Peru, but not here. And the lettuce, tomato, and mayo adds to the taste.
And then there are the french fries. Mmmmmm! They are easily the best fries I’ve ever had here. They are thin cut and always fried just right. Seriously, just thinking about them is making my mouth water right now!
I haven’t tried their ice cream, but watching the number of Peruvians who stop in for a cold cone of helados to go must mean it’s very popular locally.
The service is always impeccable, too. In fact, sometimes I have to tell the older man who is usually your server that I’m fine because he really tries to make sure everything is okay. (And he’s not pushy or overbearing, either. He genuine wants to make sure you have a great meal.)
Like most everywhere in Puerto Maldonado, it’s open to the outside, but there are good ceiling fans above so look for a spot under one and ask him to turn it on.
Trópico Cafe ★★★★
Corner of Leon Velarde and Gonzales Prada (3 blocks east of the Plaza de Armas)
I can only speak to one item here — the chocolate cake is just about the best I’ve had anywhere in Peru. (Only one place in Cusco matches it.) When I’m in Puerto, I stop by to get a piece of cake every day!
This is a very popular place with locals as the tables outside are often full of people eating cake or ice cream.
